What To Expect

During Your Consultation

In your initial consultation with Dr. Palileo, a comprehensive examination will be conducted to address all your questions and concerns. Dr. Palileo will review various treatment options, encompassing both surgical and non-surgical approaches. In cases where medical insurance approval is requisite, specific tests and measurements may be conducted to facilitate the approval process.

Once a mutually agreed-upon treatment plan is established, our surgery coordinator will assist in scheduling the procedure date. Comprehensive pre-operative and post-operative instructions will be provided, and a thorough discussion regarding expectations during the healing process will take place. Furthermore, logistical details pertaining to insurance coverage and associated out-of-pocket costs will be thoroughly discussed to ensure clarity and transparency throughout the entire process. Dr. Palileo is committed to ensuring that patients are well-informed and comfortable throughout their journey.

What To Expect

During the Healing Process

  • Bruising and swelling may initially worsen before showing signs of improvement. Patients may encounter mild aching, tightness, or discomfort in the initial days. Pain is typically described as mild and can be alleviated with over-the-counter max-strength Tylenol (if no contraindications). We advise applying ice to the eyelids for 15 minutes every hour while awake during this period.

  • Bruising typically diminishes, but the timeline varies based on the individual's healing process. It is normal for the incisions to develop mild itchiness. Sutures are typically removed during the first post-operative visit, usually one week after surgery. To expedite the resolution of bruising and swelling, warm compresses can be applied. Eye makeup can be resumed at the conclusion of the two-week period.

  • The swelling will steadily decrease. As this occurs, the incision may take on a more pink/red or dark brown hue, accompanied by small bumps and a "tight" sensation. This phase of healing usually spans 6-8 weeks, after which discoloration and bumpiness will gradually diminish and soften over time. Applying UV protection with sunscreen and utilizing topical scar treatments can aid in minimizing the visibility of the incision.

  • At this stage, the swelling and bruising will have almost entirely subsided, and the appearance of the incisions will show significant improvement. In rare cases, a slight degree of swelling may persist for up to 6-12 months. This visit with Dr. Palileo typically marks the final post-operative appointment.

How Can You Minimize Bruising?

Stop blood-thinner medications

It is imperative to discontinue any blood-thinning medications, including NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen and Aleve), baby aspirin, warfarin, etc., in preparation for surgery. Prescription blood thinners may need to be stopped at designated time periods, and these instructions will be communicated to you by Dr. Palileo and her team. Additionally, certain over-the-counter herbal supplements and vitamins, such as fish oil/Omega-3, vitamin C & E, ginseng, and ginkgo biloba can elevate the risk of bleeding and bruising and should be halted. A comprehensive list of these substances will be given to you during your pre-operative visit.

Avoid alcohol

Refrain from consuming alcohol 24 hours before and after the treatment as it can lead to vasodilation and increased risk for prolonged bruising.

Avoid smoking

Avoid smoking, as it can narrow blood vessels and may lead to permanent tissue damage. This precaution is crucial to ensure good blood flow to the surgical site, which is essential in proper healing. Avoiding smoking is one of the most important lifestyle modifications to reduce the chance of complications during the recovery phase.

Potentially helpful

Consider incorporating oral Arnica Montana supplements into your regimen. These may be initiated five days prior to the procedure and continuing for five days afterward. These supplements are readily available over-the-counter at pharmacies or through online platforms such as Amazon.

Avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting

Refrain from activities such as bending over, strenuous exercise, or heavy lifting during the initial week post-treatment. This precautionary measure is essential to optimize the healing process and ensure a smooth recovery.

Sleeping guidance

Maintain an elevated position of the head of the bed while sleeping during the initial week following the procedure. This practice is recommended to minimize swelling and promote optimal recovery.
